Byron Dorgan
Former U.S. Senator and Congressman
Senator Byron Dorgan served as a United States Senator representing North Dakota for 18 years including in the Senate Democratic Leadership for 16 years as Assistant Democratic Floor Leader and Chairman of the Democratic Policy Committee.
Dorgan’s long career in politics began in statewide elective office in the North Dakota State Capitol followed by 12 years in the U. S. House of Representatives. He served in key committees in Congress related to defense, energy, innovation, taxation, health care, urban development and others. His vast political contributions to society have ranged from identifying the systemic risk of (and requisite regulatory response to), financial derivatives products prior to the global financial crisis, advocating for policy to protect and empower indigenous groups, and fostering support for innovation (in the private and public sector), including in parts of the US historically under-represented in the innovation ecosystem.
In addition, Senator Dorgan has been a Commissioner on the U.S./China Economic and Security Review Commission. He has served three terms on the Board of Governors at Argonne National Laboratory in Illinois. He has been a Senior Fellow at the Bipartisan Policy Center, a Washington DC think tank. He has also served as an Adjunct Visiting Professor at Georgetown University in the McCourt School of Public Policy. He is a member of a number of Boards of Directors and Boards of Advisors for a number of private companies. He has served on the National Advisory Board of the Center for Arms Control and Non-Proliferation. He serves as a senior policy adviser at the Washington D.C. Law Firm Arent Fox.
Senator Dorgan is the Bestselling Author of five books, two about economic issues, two novels described as thrillers about energy policy, and a book titled The Girl in the Photograph about a young girl living on an American Indian Reservation.
He has created a non-profit organization called the Center for Native American Youth working with young Native Americans living on Indian Reservations on education opportunity and teen suicide prevention.
He holds a Bachelor of Science from the University of North Dakota, an MBA from the University of Denver, two Honorary Doctorate Degrees and several honorary Master’s Degrees.
