Baron Butler

Baron Butler of Brockwell

The Rt Hon Lord Butler of Brockwell, KG, GCB, CVO, PC has served as a Life Peer in the United Kingdom House of Lords since 1998. He served in the UK Civil Service from 1961 to 1998. Lord Butler served as Cabinet Secretary and Head of the Home Civil Service from 1988 until 1998 during the Premierships of Margaret Thatcher, John Major and Tony Blair.

He served as Private Secretary to Prime Minister Edward Heath between 1972 and 1974, Prime Minister Harold Wilson between 1974 and 1975, as Principal Private Secretary to Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher between 1982 and 1985, and Second Permanent Secretary to the Treasury between 1985 and 1987. He served as non-executive Director of HSBC Group from 1998 to 2008 and Chaired the 2004 UK Review of Intelligence on Weapons of Mass Destruction.

During his civil service career, he was seconded to the Bank of England and several City of London institutions. Lord Butler served as Master of University College, Oxford, from 1998 to 2008. He holds a Classics degree (double first) from the University of Oxford.
